Scottish Design Awards 2011
Next year's Scottish Design Awards will be launched at the end of November. If you would like to receive more information about the awards and to be added to the mailing list please send your details to Lyndsay.
The annual Scottish Design Awards, took place on Friday 28th May at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow.
The event was attended by designers, architects, industry suppliers and those in the running for an award waited to hear whether they had impressed the judging panels and earned themselves a coveted Scottish Design Award.
Before the results were revealed guests were entertained by the 2006 Scottish Comedian of the Year, Mark Nelson followed by the intro film by Family to lead into the awards.
After dinner The Drum’s editor Richard Draycott announced the awards and taking home the Design Grand Prix was Tayburn for Dr Thomas Shaw’s Ace of Hearts Cards. Winning the Design Chairman’s Award, chosen by Erik Spiekermann (from Eden Spiekermann) was Freight for the Gutter Magazine.
On the architecture side, the Grand Prix went to Malcolm Fraser Architects for Scottish Ballet at the Tramway. Judge Gerry O’Brien from Adams Kara Taylor said this was a worthy winner as “The circulation is good; it’s grappling with many complexities. It’s one of the most pleasant spaces you could find, all the people in there loved it to death despite a difficult urban locale.“
Chairman of the architecture panel Roger Zogolovitch (from Solid Space Development Ltd) chose Groves-Raines Architects for the Composting Shed at Inverleith Terrace to win his Chairman’s Award. Roger spoke of his chosen winner saying “After a long afternoon looking at nominations this composting shed stood apart for its impulsive, attractive and seductive charms. It’s a joy.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to Scottish Architecture was given jointly to Tom Elder and Dick Cannon. Tom and Dick founded their practice Elder + Cannon in 1980. It has grown from strength to strength thanks to a particular appreciation of time and place, evolving ideas and materials to maintain their practices hard won position as a contemporary paragon.
