Just when you think it is safe to open a copy of The Drum here we go again; another giant ghd spread and long quotes from TBWA’s MD Robert Harwood-Matthews. However, one gets the feeling the controversy that has won them yet another feature is not of their making, but the result of a rogue ASA ruling.

It was perhaps best described as ghd’s bad hair day. The ruling from the Advertising Standards Authority decreed that its most recent commercial could not be run again in its current form on the grounds that it was likely to cause offence to Christians.

The high quality ad showed glamorous women ‘praying’ that their new hairdos would help them in their amorous ambitions, whilst thwarting those of their rivals. The strapline ‘thy will be done’ was finished off with a ‘t’ that looked like a cross. The slogan ‘ a new religion for hair’ also featured.
