1576 starts to feel the pinch as the agency makes five staff redundant

Gorman: regrets the job losses.

Stephen Tait, business development partner at 1576, has been made redundant by the agency as it becomes the latest advertising firm in Scotland to announce job cuts.
He is among five staff that 1576 has been forced to make redundant as its clients cut back their advertising spend in light of the currently depressing climate. Ruth Yee, a leading creative, is another well-known name to fall victim in the cull.
Tait joined the agency last July from Scotsman Publications, where he was commercial director, to take on the “heavyweight role”.
However, due to financial constraints, Mark Gorman, the agency’s managing partner, has been forced to “rationalise” the team.
Gorman said: “It is a very hard time just now but, ironically, we have had a reasonable new business year. But once the clients begin to feel the pinch, unfortunately, we feel it too.
“The job cuts are very regrettable but we had to tighten things up and, regrettably, we had to lose people who would not directly affect the client service.”
The news comes just days after the closure of McCann Erickson Scotland and liquidation of Yellow M.
The Advertising Association’s quarterly report shows that spending on UK advertising fell by six per cent in the last three months.
1576’s bad news is coupled, however, with the good news that Catherine Reynolds will be joining the agency from Waterside as head of broadcast to replace Kiri Jones, who has moved to New Zealand. Furthermore, Gorman and visitscotland have denied reports that visitscotland’s advertising account, which is held by 1576, could be up for review as early as August.
