Union still on track says McAteer as Simon Scott prepares for sabbatical

Scott: kissing goodbye to his pals at The Union, but he will be back.

The Union MD, Ian McAteer, has confirmed that joint creative director Simon Scott is to leave the company at the end of this year as part of a sabbatical agreement.
As reported in the last issue of The Drum, Scott will leave the Edinburgh-based advertising agency at the end of the year to set up home in South Africa with his wife and family.
The unpaid sabbatical will see Scott take around 12 months away from the agency, as he plans to relocate to South Africa, with the intention of writing a book during this time.
During his absence he will, however, remain a partner and shareholder in the business, which he helped establish around seven years ago with Ian McAteer, Andrew Lindsay and Mark Reid.
Union boss McAteer insisted that the departure of Scott was only a temporary one and was entirely amicable.
He stated: “The concept of the sabbatical is something that we have discussed right from the very start of setting up The Union and therefore was not a surprise to us.
“We’ve known about Simon’s plans for some time, but his decision was not finalised, so we held off making the announcement.
“Simon retains his shareholding in The Union, and relations between the four of us are very amicable and we remain business partners. In that sense we do not feel that he is leaving us.
“While we will miss Simon for the time he is away, I can confirm that our creative department is in good shape going forward.”
Andrew Lindsay will remain creative director, supported by deputy creative directors Don Smith and Michael Hart.
McAteer added that the company has also recruited a new senior team consisting of Stuart Anderson and Ruth Yee, and that the business would continue as normal.
