The Chip Shop Awards are back. And this year, it is set to become part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Entries will appear in a public viewing at Elmwood Gallery, billed as an artistic event and officially part of the Fringe Events Programme.
The Awards ceremony will be take place at Underbelly in Edinburgh on Thursday 25 August, which is the last weekend of the Fringe.
Supported by Archive, the definitive showcase for ads and posters worldwide, the competition is sponsored by Robert Horne and Team Impression.
In the true anarchic spirit of The Chip Shop Awards, the design team at Manchester-based Funnel Creative has produced the new branding and literature for the show.
“The idea of the awards is pretty much anything goes - submit what you want, in any state, from sketches to finished artwork – and we wanted to capture this within the design,” said Funnel’s creative director, Daren Newman. “We wanted the whole thing to look as if it was produced by hand (which it was), so used a series of doodles, much like scribbling your ideas on a pad at the initial stages of a brief. We took inspiration from traditional Chip Shop signage and, with a helping hand from typographic artist Tim Isherwood and his endless stock of signage photography, the logotype was drawn up and left in its original form.”
