Lighthouse loses McDonald to Art School

The Lighthouse is looking for a new director following the announcement of the departure of its founding director.
Stuart MacDonald will leave the design centre - which he has been involved with since 1998 - to become the head of Gray’s School of Art at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.
MacDonald said: “For someone interested in the future of the creative and cultural industries, being head of an art school with a reputation like Gray’s in a progressive institution like the Robert Gordon University is a major opportunity.
“Gray’s School of Art has a long history of producing world-class artists and designers and an even greater prospect of adding to Scotland’s pool of creative talent.
“I am leaving the Lighthouse in a very healthy state and I knew that I would not leave unless it was to do something really interesting, and I think taking up the running of an art school is a rare opportunity.”
Janice Kirkpatrick, chair of The Lighthouse Trust commentedon MacDonald’s departure: “Everyone at The Lighthouse will miss Stuart enormously. Stuart, his team and the Board of the Lighthouse took the legacy of Glasgow’s Year as City of Architecture and Design in 1999 and built on it. Stuart’s vision, talent and hard work have created an organisation with a world-class reputation for innovative approaches to design, architecture and the creative industries.
“Put simply, Stuart consolidated Scotland’s position as a key international player in architecture and design, and a source of creative people and businesses.”
MacDonald will be involved in the search for his successor at the centre as a member of the sub-group of the main board, to which he will advise in the appointment.
The Lighthouse is hoping to appoint a successor to MacDonald in early summer.
