National Museums of Liverpool has announced London-based Pentagram will deliver the brand identity for the £72m Museum of Liverpool.
The news will come as a blow to north west agencies, which along with national and international outfits were among more than 90 applicants for the work after an open call for tenders.
Following a two-stage tender process, Pentagram was selected by the museum's branding steering panel after a six-way pitch.
The Museum of Liverpool, based on the city’s waterfront, is the legacy of the Capital of Culture year and will be the world’s first national museum devoted to a regional city when it opens in 2010.
Pentagram will implement a long-term strategy in a bid to raise the museum's profile to local, national and international audiences as it looks to attract more than 750,000 visitors a year.
Phil Redmond, chair of National Museums Liverpool, said: “National Museums Liverpool and the Museum of Liverpool are world-class and one of a kind, and the Museum of Liverpool is the largest newly-built national museum in Britain for over a century.
“It is important therefore to find a suitable image and brand that reflect this. Pentagram have a proven track record on an international stage as well as a reputation for strategic thinking and an innovative approach."

Let's watch the 'It should have gone to a Northern Agency!' comments roll in. But let's be honest... The museum is going to get the goods!! Well done to Pentagram... a great project to win. I look forward to seeing the results.

Its only a balance between the other story of the day where Tictoc were awarded the opportunity to work for the Greater London Authority.
As long as the best work wins and the tender/pitch is made on a level playing field then - well done to one and all.
