Six agencies have been appointed to the creative roster of The University of Aberdeen which will see them design and develop a broad range of marketing materials.
Making the roster are 999 Design, D8, Elmwood, Hampton Associates, THK Design and Emma Quinn Graphic Design.
The contract will see the agencies deliver deliver day-to-day, smaller scale, quick turnaround design requirements, while the full-service agencies will be tasked to deliver high spec, campaign-based design and marketing services over a longer period of time.
The three year contract began at the end of May and has the option of a one year extension.
The range of work will include interactive presentations; the design through to final artwork of a range of printed materials: corporate publications; marketing materials for cross-platform student recruitment campaigns, and alumni campaigns; materials to support fundraising, including promotional and direct mail pieces for major projects and Alumni Annual Fund; templates for recruitment advertising; and ad hoc brochures, direct mail pieces, exhibition panels/displays and giveaways across the University.
Lori Manders, director of development and external affairs, said: “We have achieved a great deal of success and our reputation as a world-leading institution is growing. We are committed to excellence in everything we do which is why I am so pleased with the quality of the roster.
“The University sector is a highly competitive one and we are competing against top intuitions globally, for staff, students and resources, therefore our marketing activity has to operate at the highest level.
“We believe that the design agencies appointed have all the skills and qualities required to support Aberdeen’s ambition to become one of the top 100 world-leading universities," she concluded.

Well done Mike Hampton!

'Top intuitions' says the spokesperson. My intuition is that the whole thing is utter madness.
What a bun fight.
Good news; I've followed their best practice...I've spent the last 6 months interviewing tradesmen. I got all the joiners to build units, the plumbers fixed and installed things and the painters have done a room each - all at no cost to me. I will soon be selecting only 4 companies who will be allowed to pitch for my future needs. I believe these 4 companies are of excellent quality and will help me realise my ambition to be one of the top 100 European exploiters.
thought, analysis and decision making are obviously not key strengths of Aberdeen uni...six agencies for design...they are delusional....and obviously have a lot time on their hands.

oh dear. did they ask every design company in scotland to pitch?

Did Aberdeen Uni charge these agencies for the Tender Documentation like Edinburgh Uni did a couple of years back? Yes they asked us for £50 to join the scramble.
Maybe Aberdeen should appoint an independent external consultant (such as my good self) to oversee the running of these 6 Agencies. I'd do it for 10% of the spend.
don't know if you know: but the EU level for having to formally tender supplies & services is £144,371 for 4 years - so the figures "guessed at" were pretty close actually!
How many agencies in final stages? Say 15 @ each spent £8k on internal time pitching etc = £360,000 of work on one tender.....
Just because they need to give the tender to multiple agencies doesn't mean they need to appoint multiple agencies. At least that's been my experience in the past. So sorry Adrian but your point is fairly, well, pointless. And why have two tenders running for essentially the same type of agency? Madness.
on that basis you will of course have to ignore the comment saying you were the voice of reason..:)
This all boils down to the fact that Aberdeen University seems to think it is the size, scale and importance of The Scottish Government and Scotland as a whole. It isn't. But if they couldn't find the skill-set and creativty in 1 or 2 companies then we can't fault them for having to go for 6 to meet thier demands.
Ah..."you don't know what you're talking about" ... the voice of a great mind.
Anonymouse for 3 reasons: I should be working just now - my boss knows you...and I want contribute and keep my job....so there....
Playing on the internet when you're supposed to be working! That's not very ethical now is it, wasting clients and your employers money! Pot, kettle and so on
"rubbish" - "thug" - "shut up" - "fight" - well, well, certainly a very erudite contribution...hopefully you're not in charge of copy on the Uni's work...
I absolutely refute that I made any claims to being ethical.
well that means there are at least 32 unemployed (or on holiday) people contributing to this forum - or there are 32 unethical people in this industry - including you. That may be a big surpise to you.
Right behind you, D8!
Playing on the internet when you're supposed to be working! That's not very ethical now is it, wasting clients and your employers money! Pot, kettle and so on
what about 6 Uni's using one agency....
and I'm guessing Jimmy Young is regretting that feeble post...although his first one is almost as though it came from a different person....how strange...
Excuse me Mr "playing on internet - pot kettle black" comment poster: so you spend a full 8 hrs a day (no more / no less) focussing on your clients and employers needs. Wow: what a very lucky guy to have such a limited work load. I work all hours, come up with ideas at all hours - and if I want to chill for 5min on the internet then I will... if you think by doing so I am wasting money then you are 105 years old. I assume you are a (cheap) suit.
Sour grapes? I don't work for a design agency - and certainly wasn't involved in the pitch - its the complete indecisive, jobs-worth, committtee based, navel gazing, self important fiasco of over indulgence that makes me actually laugh out loud at this whole thing. The Uni should actually be ashamed of themeselves.
I thoroughly enjoyed the posturing and was bitterly disappointed at the lack of 'Anchorman' style fight between slightly past-it design types outside the D8 offices.
Come on designers - it's time for the ultimate face-off. It appears Mr Young is up for it. Who else is in?
