First Visit Leeds site developed by Rippleffect

The first website for Visit Leeds has been developed by Rippleffect in a bid to showcase the city’s tourist attractions to potential visitors.

The site is part of the Visit Leeds’ destination marketing drive and will offer news and information to visitors about attractions, restaurants, bars and accommodation in the city while also acting as a promotional communications tool.

Vodcasts and podcasts are also available on the site, including videos of events and attractions taking place through out the year.

Andrew Binns, senior business development manager at Rippleffect, said: “The web is a major route to market and presents significant opportunities for Visit Leeds to promote the area’s travel and leisure industry.

“A key part of our brief was to ensure the website design reflected a cosmopolitan city, it was easy to use, engaging and encourages user interaction.”

Amanda Bond at Visit Leeds, added; “A key objective was to inspire and convert potential leisure visitors to the city through a digitally rich, interactive and engaging website with content that is focused and easily accessible for any type of visitor.

“This is a major development for us in terms of being able to demonstrate an increase in economic benefit to the city and its partners. It truly reflects the essence of a contemporary city and all that's on offer here.”

From the word go this website takes Leeds a step back in terms of its old grimy image. We don't need anymore black... what happened to the vibrancy that is puported to be at the heart of our city's tourism ethos...? It's as bad as the logo... Clean, intriguing and simple graphics are the key to great web presence but you've missed the mark.

No, the people down there below you are expressing their opinion. If you don't like it don't put your work up for critique.

No, just objective views from people passionate about design and the perceptions of our home town to visitors.

Hello, some interesting comments. Always good to hear negative ones as well as positive ones. If anyone has anything they feel particularly strongly about please feel free to email me abinns@rippleffect.com as the site is Leeds' online image to the world and we are happy to take on board any constructive comments. The site has been extremely well received by it's first visitors but like any website some people will have issues with it.

As far as VisitLeeds giving the work to a non Leeds agency, there was a very rigerous tender process for this project and a number of stakeholders involved in the decesion making process. We were lucky enough to be selected. If VisitLiverpool went to a Leeds agency we would not complain as long as the process was fair, which the VisitLeeds one was.

Leeds has the largest amount of green space for any UK city other than London. So why is this site all about black, dark, night. The first impression it gives people is that Leeds is all about nightlife. Snor. Come on guys. This is often what happens when people from outside a city design something. They don't truely understand the true fabric of a city. I'm all for 'best man wins' in a pitch. if Leeds agencies pitched and didn't come up to scratch then fine, so be it, but this doesn't do our city justice.

and as far as organisations from a city only using agencies from that city, isnt that a rather small minded, insular, uncommercial, naive childish attitude? there are some great agencies in leeds and they are busy winning business outside of the city. we would never want to be awarded a contract soley due to our location.

Only the home page is black. All the other pages have white background. I'm not sure there is a problem, but if there is, why not swap the style sheet based on time of day? Daytime Leeds has bright pic and styling but after 7pm it swaps. The content pages needn't be affected. Just sayin...
