Roses Design Awards Results

Roses Design Awards Results Roses Design Awards Results

A poster campaign created by Manchester-based design agency True North, has won the top communications prize at this year's Roses Design Awards, in association with Invest in Nottingham.

The work for APG Highlight, picked up the Grand Prix Award on Friday night (23 Oct) at a gala dinner in Nottingham.

The panel of judges that selected the winning designs was chaired by Michael Wolff, of Michael Wolff & Co, who also chose Leeds-based B&W Studio's work for St Georges Crypt for his Chairman's Award from all the graphic design categories.

The annual awards saw the cream of the UK's regional design industry gather at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham to celebrate the creative high points of the year – the first time that the event has taken place out with Manchester.

The other top award on the night went to Uniform in Liverpool, who were presented with the Design Team of The Year award....

For the full list of results, judges and for more information on the awards, see www.rosesdesignawards.com.

Meanwhile, in the Architecture categories, it was Edinburgh-based Reiach and Hall Architects who won the Grand Prix prize for its New Stobhill Hospital.

The Chairman's Award, selected by Ian Simpson, of Ian Simpson Architects, also went to an Edinburgh-based firm, Roxburgh McEwan Architects for its Albert Street Cottage for client Norman MacDonald, with Architect / Architect Team of the Year being awarded to John McAslan & Partners.

Dear Anon 12:14,
I feel I must take issue with your wild accusations that I am a sexist, after what you suggest was nothing more than a tirade of vulgar remarks made against women on Friday evening, something akin to a night at the London Palladium with Chubby Brown and Bernard Manning headlining.
My first comment was simply a well intentioned remark on the loveliness of my female colleague who was helping me hand out the awards. That was not an opinion but a clear fact. Lisa is attractive - I doubt anyone on this planet would wish to argue that point. Unless, obviously, you do.
I suppose, reading between the lines, you are alleging I am sexist because I remarked on people's appearances during the show, but it is a fact that I also commented on the appearance of my male colleague Cameron, who I described as "the Brad Pitt of our office".
I also gave compliments to a chap called Stephen Wills who was regularly on stage. during the evening.
The lady of whom I said "it's just like any other Friday night for you isn't it Louise" is not, in fact, a designer who I do not know, but a colleague who I have known for many years and who I also know would not be at all offended by a light-hearted comment such as that.
Also, with regards to the couple who took to the stage and I introduced them as mother and son - if you noticed when they got on stage I did make the effort to actually ask them the nature of their relationship and hence was fully aware that they were not mother and son. It was clearly a joke as anyone with a working set of eyeballs would have seen that they were obviously not mother and son.
I would like to throw the ball back at you that perhaps you are more sexist than I as you are here simply defending the females who I allegedly slighted.
You make no defense for the chap who took to the stage of whom I said "he is no stranger to sitting alone in his bedroom fiddling with his joystick"! I was effectively, and jokingly might I add, calling him a w**ker, but you don't feel the need to run to his rescue.
I also commented on a guy's beard. And yet I hear no howls of support for him. I suppose he's a bloke and can stick up for himself, eh?
I'd also like to apologise to myself because at one point I did suggest that my jokes were crap and old. I was very offended by my comments at that point and seriously did consider leaving the stage myself. I mean, why should I stand up there working my ass off if all I am going to do is slag myself off. But I soldiered on remembering the words of the legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, who once sang, "the show must go on." You're damn right Freddie.
So, that is my defence. I'm sorry if I did offend anyone at The Roses Design Awards. Sorry to the directors of The Carnyx Group if I have cost you a few tickets to next year's event. I'll await my P45.
Sorry to Lisa for saying you looked great on Friday.
Sorry to Louise for suggesting that you have ever stood next to four men on a Friday night.
Sorry to James for suggesting that he has ever had any type of physical contact with any part of his own anatomy.
Sorry to John Glenday for saying "can we welcome John and his beard to the stage" to highlight John has a new beard and a damn impressive one at that.
Sorry to Cameron for suggesting he's a damn good looking guy, when he is actually quite ordinary looking.
Sorry to Stephen Wills for suggesting you are very popular among your staff and clients.
Sorry to Clare and Matt Bridgestock of John Gilbert Architects for jokingly suggesting you are mother and son. I just felt the absurdity of the claim would make it quite apparent that it was a joke.
Sorry to anyone I have left out, but if you do want a personal apology just drop me a line and I'll sort one out for you.
But most of all I'm sorry that it seems we now live in a world where we can't have a good natured laugh and a joke anymore at an awards ceremony without running the absurd risk of being deemed sexist and disrespectful of women.
I love women. My mum, who I love and cherish above anything else on earth, is one. My wonderful girlfriend is a woman too. So are my sisters. And my nieces. My aunties. My cousins.... Bloody hell, they're everywhere.

Can I step in to defend my editor who is certainly not a sexist. He's been using the same patter at awards ceremonies for several years now (really, he has) and it's never offended anyone before. But I'm sure he'll also have welcomed the fact that someone was actually listening to what he was saying too. It's a rare thing!

And John's beard is a cracker. Well pointed out.

It's a bit sad to see how far the Roses have fallen that the Design Grand Prix winners don't evn think it is worth turning up to collect their award.

Anon 16.10, Woody Allen didn't show up to collect his Academy Awards when Annie Hall won four Oscars. That was in 1977. The Oscars seem to have survived.

Hey Richard. Glad to see you didn't get too wound up by that comment. Are you Jimmy Carr's scriptwriter?

Well said Richard. Didn't manage to get to the Roses Design Awards (I was with Woody Allen) but really enjoyed your patter at the Scottish Ad Awards. V good, even if you do support Derby - oops, was that Derbyist?

Thanks to everyone for your kind messages of support. Is the Jimmy Carr job still going Mark?
