The Lowry in Salford is to host a three month exhibition curated by BJL celebrating 'Art in Advertising'.
The Manchester agency has spent six months planning an interactive gallery which will explore the relationship between advertising and art when it opens in January.
BJL say the exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to The Lowry to understand how an ad campaign is put together.
It will feature sound, vision and photographic installations and there will be on-site workshops where BJL's creative teams will "demonstrate and demystify the process of ‘art’ or creativity and show that advertising is indeed a great work of art".
The Lowry celebrates 10 years at its Salford Quays home next year and for the last eight years it has worked with BJL.
Jackie Holt, a partner at BJL, said the agency wanted to mark the venue's birthday and their long-standing collaboration "with something special".
She said: "What we want to do is have some fun, and hopefully inspire people about the medium of advertising, showcasing what a truly creative industry we work in.
"It’s all been about doom and gloom these past couple of years and this has given us a great opportunity to work with our clients to provide different interpretations of art.
"Creating art installations that have association with our clients’ brands will also be a key part of the journey we take visitors on.”

If I remember correctly, Andy Warhol's background was in advertising. I think he was a commercial illustrator. I'd imagine this contributed towards his interest in consumerism and his production line style of creating work.
It's unfortunate this exhibition is only in Salford. Are there any plans to uproot it and have it do the rounds?
The usual relationship of Advertising and Art is that Advertising mirrors (cribs) what's maybe going on in the art world (give or take a couple of years).
Sounds like a fun/good exhibition, would have been great to work on no doubt.

any event that helps persuade punters our industry is a professional discipline not a couple of fellas in the pub dreaming up wacky ideas has to be a good thing.

Funny you should say that Ben. It was only this week in my local sports club, in an ad break, when the old guard at the bar commented on the Ford ad 'Who the bloody hell comes up with stuff like that?' I saw no harm in saying it's what I do. 'Really? I hope you don't do those bloody sofa ads'. I left, sharpish.

there's a great exhibition on at tate modern which touches on this
i do find it pretty ironic that bjl, whose creative output historically has been very pedestrian, feel qualified to tackle such a subject. they lack any credibility in this area. why should i go and listen to someone whose own work has never registered on the creative richter scale apart from the odd bit of chip shop?

Claire, Andy Warhol's background was indeed advertising. He first approached art collector Michel Roux and asked to paint the Absolut bottle. And so was born an iconic campaign that's now run for 15 successful years. I was lucky enough to produce some ads for Absolut in London a couple of years ago.
This exhibition is aimed at encouraging today’s artists to create cutting edge art to engage with the many themes and brands within our client list, using advertising and media as creative canvases. We're involving local schools, colleges, businesses and the great Manchester public. It's educational and inspirational and art works will be auctioned for charity once the 3 month exhibition finishes.

I can't think of another agency ever doing such an exhibition, but if they have, so what. This is going to be great for The Lowry, great for budding artists/creatives, great for BJL and great for those who visit.
And you weak folk who hide behind the anon button, I say to you come along and take the live briefs if you think you can do better. Tom and I will give you constructive critisism.

Who's to say this is or isn't art? Is an unmade bed or half a cow in a tank any more art than what we produce in advertising?
It is for the individual not the masses to decide what they think is art or not so why not go along and make your own mind up - then keep your opinions to yourself...

It looks like an interesting exhibition to me. And as to whether art is advertising? Well, there's Warhol, but more recently Damian Hirst's been doing a pretty good job of basically using PR and advertising as mediocre 'art'. The crossovers are everywhere. And none of it's going to change the world.
...and I'm looking forward to seeing the 'photographic instillations'. They sound great.

I can see that this is a great PR idea for BJL, but not sure that viewing art installations that have association with their clients’ brands is a journey I particularly want to go on when I visit an art gallery. Is anyone else uncomfortable with that?
Go or don't go - it's your choice, but for god's sake can people on here stop whining about everything that they didn't do or think of themselves.
