August 2010 will see the launch of a new festival for the marketing industry which will run alongside Edinburgh’s main festival season.

Spearheaded by The Marketing Society, plans for the new event to showcase Scotland’s marketing talent will be unveiled tonight (25 November) at the society’s annual St Andrew’s dinner by William Burdett-Coutts of The Edinburgh Festival and Assembly Rooms (pictured).

The marketing festival is likely to take the form of a four day event involving keynote speakers, workshops, conferences and an awards ceremony for the best marketing initiative by a Fringe performer.

Other marketing organisations will be encouraged to put on their own events alongside this.

The event will mainly be funded by sponsorship, but Government funding is also being sought.

Graeme Atha, chairman of Frame Advertising and chairman of the Marketing Society, said: "We would love government to support the creative industries."

Great idea. I think many people in the industry here have justifiable concerns about the future of the industry in Scotland, this festival could be a very positive move towards retaining talent and developing the 'brand' of the Scottish marcomms industry, on a global level. It's easy to get stuck in negative thoughts about 'all the talent and clients moving south' but we tend to forget how much of a world leader Scots have been in business, science and the arts since the Enlightenment - Edinburgh in particular. Lets not give up yet.
Piggybacking on the worldwide fame of the Edinburgh festivals could work well too...however there will no doubt be those who feel that this will seem like 'yet another festival' or even that it won't be taken seriously in terms of business when becoming associated so closely with the arts - yet this is its very strength - creativity plays a huge part in the industry and the fact that Edinburgh created and has continued to develop the largest arts festival in the world should be used to our advantage.
