Despite outright protestations to the contrary last month, Greggs has moved its £2m advertising account from Propaganda to Gratterpalm without a pitch.
Gratterpalm has been briefed to developed a new campaign for 2010, despite the client stating that Propaganda would continue to develop a campaign for next year.
The agency is already responsible for the in-store communications for Greggs since its appointment in 2008.
Scott Jefferson, customer & marketing director for Greggs, said, "I'd like to
thank Propaganda for the fantastic job they've done on the Greggs brand, helping us define the positioning, build awareness and drive sales. I've thoroughly enjoyed working with the team there and we will always owe them a debt of gratitude.” Scott went on to say “The broader relationship with Gratterpalm heralds an exciting new era."
Jefferson recently denied reports that the account was set to move.
"We have no plans to appoint any other new agencies. Categorically there is no shortlist of ad agencies - if anyone thinks they know differently I'd love to hear who's on the list,” said Jefferson in November who also denied that chairman Derek Netherton was to oversee a presentation of ideas from agencies while looking for a new campaign strategy.
A spokesperson for Propaganda commented, "Naturally we're very disappointed but we respect the client's decision. We are very proud of the strategic and creative contribution that we have made to Greggs, whose growth as a brand and business in the last four years of our relationship has been widely recognised in the national press of late. We wish Greggs and Gratterpalm the best of luck with the next campaign."

I can't imagine that anyone, Gratterpalm included, will be taking any pledges of devotion from this client too seriously in the future.
The SOPHIE work was inspired and Propaganda should be proud, no need to connect it with this story, which looks like they have been stitched up a bit by a client who says one thing but does the other.
Did Jefferson lie? He did say they "have no plans to appoint any other new agencies"....Gratterpalm did already work for Greggs....maybe he was just choosing his words carefully?

Gutted. Would have loved to get a shot at that brand.
It looks like Mr Jefferson has been put on the spot, and fair play to the man, he didn't lie outright - just by ommission, by choosing carefully selected words (as per anon 12:14 comments).
It is sad that such cloak and dagger tactics exist and will always lead to much speculation ... but then hasn't it always?
Can't wait for the first Greggs half price, must end soon sale campaign!

Seems Gratterpalm are on a roll.

Well done Gratts - top win for a top agency.
Not sure why there's all the bile for Scott Jefferson, Greggs were with Propaganda for a few years, so it's not exactly like they chop and change every 5 mins is it?
There was no pitch and no new agencies looked at, which is what he said.
One of their current roster agencies got the biz - live with it.
If they were happy with the work being produced it would have stayed were it was, they obviously weren't so it moved.
Looking forward to see where Rick & Pete go with the brand.
I agree Mark, the client hasn't gone to pitch with the account and has instead entrusted to it to an agency it already knows and maybe that should be applauded. I do hear however that Propaganda were in the dark about this until very recently but if a client wants to go, then there's nothing to stop them.
Well done chaps. Great win.
All the best with the new campaign.
Your Attorney.
19.08 - Ever thought that their strategy might not require "edgy" (or Northern comedians for that matter)? Unfair comment on an agency that seems to be doing well in tough times. Good luck to them I say. I wish we were winning accounts with the profile of Greggs (in fact I wish we were winning accounts full stop).
To show his ex-client that he is really not bovvered in any way at all by their decision, will Julian Kynnastin now follow his own slightly bizarre precedent and immediately buy a brand new, "up yours" supercar?
If so, really hope he goes for the Baguetty Veyron.

So Anonymous 19:02, what you've actually done there is put forward an entirely fictional scenario about which you have no insight or hard facts on and a process or situation that you know nothing about - I particularly like the arguement of "so, if this happened..." by the way, and then use it to damn both a client and agency.
Congratulations! a fine career in tabloid journalism awaits you.
Well done RAP, they aint half bitchy up North!
see, all is forgotten now. who's next?
Another award for Barrie and Tim coming up...oh...erm.
Surely now after this, Barrie and tim will have to be offered their old jobs back
Ah, the dreaded vote of confidence.
