Director Friren joins Aardman commercial department while it creates Nintendo US ad

Aardman Animations has appointed director Helene Friren to its commercial department.

Friren has directed animated films such as Mitizenship/Mitoyennetés and Excuse My French and has created commercials for brands such as Orange, Great Ormand Street Hospital and Yoplait. She is also about to begin production on a six minute film called AuPoil having been awarded a grant of 30000 Euros by the Foundation Lagardère in Paris.

Heather Wright, head of commercials for Aardman, commented: “It’s so exciting to have a director on board who’s got a totally fresh take on Flash animation as well as a great sense of humour.”

In other news, the Bristol-based animation house has produced a Christmas advert to promote the Nintendo DSi in the USA, using a free downloadable application on the device, Flipnote Studio.

The application enables users to draw pictures with the aid of a stylus as well as add their own sound and create their own animations.
