Derbyshire PCT launches viral to show binging dangers

Derbyshire PCT launches viral to show binging dangersDerbyshire PCT launches viral to show binging

Two 'shocking' new videos showing a woman urinating in the street and a man dressed as a turkey being run over by a car have been released by the NHS.

The first video, Bloody Mary, shows a young woman urinate in the street then fall over while being jeered by a group of passing young men in Chesterfield Market Place. The second, Tequila Slammer, shows a young lad on a fancy dress night out dancing then mock fighting with his friends in a Chesterfield street when he gets knocked down by a car.

The social marketing campaign from the PCT was developed in partnership by The Rocket Science Group and Raw. It includes working with local peer educators who will give out approximately 5,000 free food vouchers for Subway and 2,000 free water bottles to revellers across Derbyshire on the build up to Christmas.

Alison Pritchard, a consultant in public health at Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust, said: “Cocktales is a unique campaign we have chosen to use because it really appeals to young people.

“We know from our research they watch YouTube videos that capture their attention. Our videos use dark comedy to make them laugh but then show the serious side of the problems alcohol can cause.

“We want young people to watch these videos, think about the main messages of safe drinking and use the information to make informed choices on their nights out. We also want them to visit the website www.cocktalesmix.co.uk to win a free state-of-the-art iPhone and learn more.”

Cocktales is aimed at people aged between 18 and 24 in a bid to crack down on the health problems caused by alcohol. During 2008/9 alcohol specific hospital admissions for this age group cost the PCT around £162,000 and over all age groups cost in the region of £3.7m. These are specifically alcohol related admissions which include poisoning by alcohol, acute intoxication and a range of alcohol induced liver conditions.

Last year, there were around 15,000 alcohol-related hospital admissions in Derbyshire County which is worse than the England average.

Around 112,000 people in the county are hazardous or harmful drinkers and around 350 deaths are caused by alcohol ever year. About 1,100 people are in structured alcohol treatment annually.

What exactly is 'shocking' about this stuff? You can see this happening every Friday and Saturday night in most places around the UK.

Moral of this story: If you're going to be a dickhead, don't do it at the side of the road.

I find the turkey being run over curiously erotic and yet the woman peeing in the street does nothing for me. Do I need help?

I can see the peeing woman film being posted on many 'niche' blogs and websites. Though possibly not ones that relate to binge drinking.

I felt really uncomfortable watching these. Not in the kind of way I'd want to send them to my mates.

Well I hope it has some effect, but the problem with these films is they are not real.

None of them look genuinely drunk, the camera work is over-stylised, and the acting is simply not authentic.

If an old fart like me can see through this faux 'booze britain' footage, then the target audience certainly will.

The 'boob flash' car crash viral - now that looked real. That's how to do it.

I grew up in Chesterfield. Truth be told, the behaviour in this video isn't going to shock anyone, especially anyone who goes out in Chesterfield.

This campaign will have no demonstrable impact whatsoever. Our Northern European drinking culture, which has been prevalent for hundreds of years, means that getting uncontrollably drunk is engrained in our society at all levels from the council estate pub to the Bullingdon club. Stop wasting tax payers money on this ineffectual drivel and get lashed!

And if you slash in the street or get knocked down, just take it on the chin because you were loving being pissed up.

Have to agree - In my local it would be considered nothing short of a knighthood to be run over, steaming drunk in a turkey suit and survive. There would be free beer for at least as long as you had your leg or wing in plaster.

DAMN! The Bloody Mary video is no longer there: "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation" say YouTube.

Are they unfamiliar with YouTube’s T&C's?

I'm into 'Golden Rain' big time. Why don't I have the good fortune to run into bingy women like that?
