A new journalism training scheme begins at BBC Scotland today which will allow 12 journalists to meet and learn from its staff while also witnessing how its newsroom is run.

The Step Up programme aims to develop the confidence and knowledge of those on the course to help them in applying for media jobs over a 10 week period and will cover TV, radio and online.

Each candidate will also be paired with a BBC mentor who will give one-to-one support and advice during the scheme.

The course involves weekly workships covering news broadcasting which will teach practical skills for a news room as well as career advice, group projects in TV, radio and online, mentoring sessions and a final showcase party where candidates will present the new project they compile throughout the course.

The course has previously run at BBC London, although this is the first time it has been adopted in Scotland.
