The Scottish Government has been running a public information campaign relaying advice on how to deal with the extreme weather across press and radio as well as local and national PR through its website.

The campaign was created in a quick turnaround period by The Leith Agency, with media being handled by Mediacom Scotland to advise householders and motorists on how to cope with the severe winter weather.

Roger Williams, head of marketing and new media at Scottish Government, said;
“This is a good example of an integrated communications campaign and was put together very quickly to react to the unexpectedly severe weather conditions. Our own PR, marketing and online professionals worked seamlessly with Ministerial Communications teams and our external agencies to ensure the Scottish public received the best possible advice on how to cope with the ‘Big Freeze’ and consequently the thaw.

“It’s rewarding to see our Strategic Marketing and Communications teams working in parallel and under pressure to deliver a high profile public information campaign”.

I sat on my carpet for two nights hoping it would fly, but the bitterly cold conditions kept it firmly stuck to the ground. Thank God a passer-by gave me a newspaper on day three, when the ad came to my rescue.

On a more worrying note, I'm disappointed that Leith and the Scottish Government did not understand the Health and Safety ramifications of clearing your neighbour's path.

Unless your elderly housebound neighbour had adequate public liability insurance, this advert encouraged members of the public to take action that would expose them to expensive injury claims.

To quote Government whip Lord Davies of Oldham:

'If people totally clear away all snow and return the pavement to the situation it was in before the snow landed, they have done an excellent job.

‘If it is done in a less than complete manner and leaves ice, which is more dangerous than the original covering of snow, it may not be the local authority responsible but the householder for having dealt with the pavement.'

I'm surprised this isn't front page news....
