Castrol enlists Ronaldo and The Mob for Power 1 ad

Castrol has unveiled a new global ad campaign starring Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of its sponsorship of this summer's World Cup.

The television ad, for Castrol's Power 1 brand, was directed by The Mob's Hollywood director Paul W S Anderson, who was commissioned by Ogilvy Singapore.

It was shot by The Mob in Madrid on Phantom HD cameras and features former Manchester United star Ronaldo attempting to outperform a motorcyclist doing football tricks on his bike.

In other news at The Mob, the production company has added D&AD Gold winning director Mark Chaudoir to its roster.

Chaudoir previously worked for the BBC and Red Bee Media and has already shot his first work for The Mob, a campaign for Rightmove, commissioned by Hooper Galton.

It's an old Big Train sketch, which Playstation 'borrowed' about five years ago.

I'm not keen on the ronaldo ad - mind you consider the target market - motorcyclists. who love football watching the world cup and it's probably spot on

I like football, and I don't mind motorbikes, but that Ronaldo ad is one of the most wretched pieces of advertising I've seen in a long time. And considering what it must have cost, it's woeful. His facial expressions are truly ridiculous. Yes it's an ad written for the global market, but that's no excuse. Also, rightmove is not 'nice' - it's a hackneyed idea that weve all seen loads of times in various guises.

It ain't bitching mate, it's just honest comments on a piece of work which is far from great. If you believe people should be congratulated just for getting a piece of work made, well fair enough. If I thought it was good, I'd say so. But good it ain't.

Surely the Attenborough-esque nature documentary where the animals are replaced by whatever you're advertising is in the Top 5 industry cliches of all time; so much so that to overcome it you have to do something really good (and relevant to the brand) like the fantastic Land Rover ads from a few years ago.

Rightmove have worked with some decent regional agencies (and got decent ads in return) over the years so it's sad to see them getting hackneyed stuff like this from a London outfit.

The Ronaldo ad would be quite good, if Ronaldo wasn't in it.

Actually, one good argument for removing the anon button is so that agencies know not to bother considering 09:09 for CD.

It would be a lot more watchable if Ronaldo got his kit off!
