The Drum has learned that Gary Setchell, creative director of McCann Erickson Communications House in Birmingham, is to leave the agency a year after he rejoined from KLM.
Setchell is understood to be leaving the industry altogether when he departs McCanns in April to pursue a career in teaching.
He told The Drum: “It’s something that has been inspired by seeing my own children grow and quite simply, if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it.
“The folks at McCann are terrific to work with and have been incredibly understanding. I wish them and everyone else I’ve had the pleasure to work with in the industry the very best.”
Setchell returned to McCanns in April 2009 after a year as creative director of rival Birmingham advertising agency KLM, which he joined, from McCann, in March 2008.
At the time of rejoining McCanns he said that the opportunity to work as creative director of the company was one "I just couldn’t ignore".
KLM went on to replace Setchell with Paul Baker, who was creative director of McCann Birmingham when Setchell originally worked at the company.
Dean Lovett, CEO of McCann Erickson Birmingham, admitted that it was a surprise that Setchell was leaving but wished him well and said that he was now considering replacing him with either an individual or a creative team to oversee the creative department of around 80 staff. He also indicated the possibility that the appointment could be internal or could come from within the regions.

Feb. 2010 - Paul Baker returns to McCanns. Lovett.
"Please Mr. Setchell, may I go to the toilet?"
"Only if you've got a Job Spec and have completed all the necessary paperwork."

Good luck mate - keep in touch.
As well as the cane, please try to incorporate the ruler on the back of the legs of misbehaving scamps, just as a variant!

Hope all goes well Gary! Both my parents were teachers, they told me "never become a teacher!" So good luck!!
i hope he's not teaching advertising.
Great news, I wish him all the best. I made the same move last year. Its hard work but far more worth while than the thankless/immoral job of advertising!

There's a joke in here about if you can't do... But I'll avoid it.
Good luck Gaz, Brave decision. All the best!
It'll take a while to adjust to your 'clients' listening to you.
Brave and brilliant – Good luck Gaz

PS. Some school's gonna have the best Christmas Fair posters.
Good luck Gazza - although see when did McCanns have a creative department of 80! It's more like 8 isn't it......oh and where is London guru Steve these days?????

Good luck Gary. I'm sure you'll be as inspirational as ever.
Well Gary, I can't blame you for opting for the easy option. A strange decision but at least you look like a teacher.
Setchell. Satchel. It was clearly his destiny.
Do they have a revolving door on the CD's office?

if the revolving door is like this 52 secs in:

Well done to McCann’s and Dean Lovett for making a bold move.
Birmingham was the centre of the industrial revolution.
And if they can apply their own industry to Billy’s imagination, they could have a new revolution on their hands.
Good luck to them.
It is a strange business that we work in. Perhaps the experience of KLM and Mcanns has killed Garys enthusiasm
Good luck Gary - remember - it's not called a blackboard any more. Big no no that one!
Yep, it says a lot about the joy of McCann B'ham in that it's driven this poor bloke into doing something altruistic.

Good luck Gary - I'm sure you'll succeed in whatever you choose to do.

This decision must have taken bigger balls than being CD of McCanns. Massive love Big G!
Bring back the cane!
I think Cameron may have meant Lawyers, Doctors, Bankers, Dustman etc. Something a bit more up the food chain from ad bods.

114 days holiday, inset days, hangover days, snow days off, coffee breaks, 4pm finish, loads of confiscated drugs and fights - good work Gaz.
