Council overspends by nearly £500,000 on Marketing Manchester funding

Manchester City Council has paid Marketing Manchester around £500,000 too much.

But despite the large sums involved it is not seeking to get its money back; saying such a move would prove too problematic.

Marketing Manchester is paid for by a number of  Greater Manchester Councils. The City council provides 35% of the funding with the remainder being made up by the other nine councils in the region.

However, somebody got the sums wrong - and the City Council ended up paying 65% of the budget over the last six years; saving the other authorities £46,000 each over the period.

A report to the Association of Great Manchester Authorities discovered the mistake.

Paul Simpson - Marketing Manchester's director of finance - describes himself as "a qualified accountant for over 20 years." Didn't spot the extra £500k in the bank then, Paul?
