Welcome to Yorkshire has claimed that its marketing campaign, 'A long weekend in Yorkshire isn’t long enough', has resulted in an upturn in visitors to the county.

The tourism agency says independent figures from the United Kingdom Tourism Agency, which show a 31 percent increase in the number of UK visitors taking their summer holiday in the county in 2009, suggest the campaign worked.

Gary Verity, Welcome to Yorkshire’s chief executive said: “I’m over the moon. This is an outstanding result. The Welcome to Yorkshire marketing campaign has paid off big time."

The campaign, which was created with McCann Erickson Manchester, has been running across TV, press, cinema and online for the past 11 months.

Welcome to Yorkshire is currently planning a new marketing campaign that will break in the spring. It was confirmed in December that the contract was put out to tender.

Verity said: “Our aim is to keep Yorkshire in the hearts and minds of people looking to book half-term activities, Easter breaks and their summer holidays. The next stage of our marketing campaign has gone live this week and lets people know ‘there’s a great deal going on in Yorkshire’.

“That will run throughout February and March before we unveil details of our exciting new marketing campaign for 2010/11.”

I'm no expert but it seems fairly obvious it's got more to do with the recession than an advertising campaign. The fact still remains there are plenty of destinations to choose from and if Yorkshire's done better than other regions then good on 'em!

So why has it gone out to tender?

Surely not, I can't believe this kind of thing goes on!

Disappointing that Yorkshire feels the need to work with a non-Yorkshire agency to execute this campaign. Perhaps it was because Gary Verity had worked with McCanns before! Job for the boys???
