2014 Games marketing boss discusses identity

An interview with John Donnelly, director of marketing and sponsorship for the 2014 Commonwealth Games following the launch of its identity this morning.

Designed by Glasgow headquartered agency Marque, the logo has been keenly anticipated since the agency was appointed by the Commonwealth Games organising committee in October, beating another 65 international agencies which applied to tender.

Shrouded in secrecy, today is the first time that the logo has been shown to the public with only a handful of people within even Glasgow City Council having seen it in advance.

Here, John Donnelly, director of marketing and sponsorship for the Games, talks to The Drum about the process of designing the identity, the appointment procedure and explains how it will be used in promoting and marketing Glasgow’s event over the course of the next four years.

Waiting for the first "my wee boy/granny could have done it, what a waste of money" or... "It reminds me of...." comment, from people who will remain anonymous. I was there this morning at the launch and think it ticks all the 'political' boxes and will be flexible. It's all in the application of it anyway, innit?

Didn't think it needed fireworks to get the 'dynamic' message over but it's good.

Kinda like it, but looks like their common guild logo with a splash of colour. Hmmm.

Actually just looked at the rationale and kinda like it a wee bit more, but still looks like the 'Guild' logo.

When I first saw it I thought hmmm! Read the branding story which made it interesting. Looked again & thought hmmm! Ignored it for a little while, came back, looked at it again, thought hmmm! Read the expected comments & thought hmmm!

I think it looks like a 3 part logo, the colours I'm definately not sure about, I think it looks/works ok in B&W and reversed. But like a bad record, if played often enough I'll be hmmm!along to it!
