D8’s Birmingham studio has designed the identity for the 2010 First Light Awards.

The annual ceremony showcases the next generation of British filmmakers and celebrates the creative talents of young people across the UK.

The ceremony was hosted by Dick and Dom and took place at the Odeon Leicester Square on 2 March, with awards presented by James Corden, Jason Isaacs, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Little, Nick Frost and Sir Ian McKellen.

D8's brief included all print, on-screen graphics and environmental graphics for the venue as well as the design of the awards trophies.

A film awards ID that is based on a star symbol. How original. That could start a new trend.

Surprised a publisher of your calibre would criticise work for another awards evening....

Fight. Fight. Fight.

Maybe I've missed something but didn't The Drum encourage the design community to defend themselves and prove the value of their craft yesterday? Now they're openly criticising another identity that's no better or worse...

Bet this didn't cost £100k.

James

If you hadn't (like me) anonymously posted a critical comment about the ridiculous idea of a business introductory service hosting an awards evening then Gordon Young wouldn't have posted his derogatory comment. But when he saw that anonymous post and checked who it was, you were in for it.

Anon (to most)

I think you're all missing the big picture here, Dic and Dom hosted the awards, once again taking much needed bread from the table of the Chuckle Brothers.

Anon 22.13. Your argument about drum being pointless seems a bit off as the majority of the Scottish design sector has spent all of this week on drum's bloody website. how dull would this week have been without all this banter on here? more of the same next week gentlemen. and also who's having the last laugh, us designers slagging eachother off or drum with their growing web stats? I actually like the drum and the people there, I don't think any of them are evil or bad. And the reason I am posting anon is because I work for a newspaper and get at least 2 or 3 decent stories a week off the site. in fact I nicked one yesterday, thanks Richard, Gordon and co.

One of D8's briefs was to design the awards trophy..I think somebody needs a bollocking.

James, is not just a rehash of last year's work?

Put the old one up again and we can have a game of spot the difference. I could give it to my 5 year old before bedtime stories.

Why is anyone giving a s**t whether the award itself is a similar format to last years? Seems it's only the typography that has changed (and maybe the colour?). The client may well have wanted some continuity between this years and last years awards, so a subtle update would be on brief.

Watched a bit of the Oscars last week. That Cedric Gibbons must have been a lazy swine, 80 odd years and that award has barely changed. Regurgitation of the highest order. Somebody definitely needs a bollocking there.

Perhaps people could point out the difference between an Oscar statuette last year (or any year) and this year? Or maybe a BAFTA?

yes but the difference is D8 think this story is news worthy. Now if the Oscars redesigned the award this year, that would be worth a press release don't you think?

I think D8 have really missed a trick here, have they not heard the phrase "We're all made of stars" based on the theory that on a basic quantum level, all the matter in the universe is essentially made up of stardust. Surely a far more fitting double act to host the awards would have been the current darling of quantum theory Professor Brian Cox and his good comedic friend / co-presenter Robin Ince.

I believe this would have added a much need 6 or 7 dimensions to the proceedings.

I'm sure Prof Cox has got time on his hands with the Large Hardon Collider being on the fritz so often.

Come on D8.
