Scottish Government aims to recognise young talent

Scottish Government aims to recognise young talentScottish Government aims to recognise young talent

Scottish businesses in the cultural and arts industry urged to sign young employees up to the WorldSkills UK competition.

The Scottish Government is calling on companies in the graphic design and visual merchandising sectors to recognise and promote the emerging talent they have within their businesses.

Winners will then be selected to represent the UK at the international skills competition WorldSkills London 2011 in October 2011.

Keith Brown, Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, said: "The skills development of our current and future workforces is paramount to a strong economic recovery for Scotland with sustainable economic growth as our long-term aim.

"Our human capital is one of Scotland’s greatest strengths and we must harness the full potential of our young people so they are equipped and ready for employment. The talent and dedication of those involved in WorldSkills Scotland will be brought to the fore through this competition and I would encourage those not involved to get involved. This is a real opportunity for young people to showcase their talents and hopefully we can find some Scottish medallists for WorldSkills London 2011."

Dear Keith,

If the 'development of our current and future workforce...is paramount', can you kindly sort out the MASSIVE DAMAGE being caused by the Scottish Government's very own crippling, flawed and cumbersome procurement process for commissioning work from its appointed design companies.

If you need to know who to talk to: CGCOPE and their Contract Manager for creative industries based up at the Scottish Government.

Our industry is sick and tired of seeing Ministers being quoted publicly on things like 'growth' and 'recovery' whilst your organisation is fleecing us behind the public's back.

INVESTIGATE please.

Get over it. All pitch processes are flawed for the losers. The Scottish Government has been keeping average agencies afloat for years so you should be forever in their debt. If design ability wasn't taken into account that's probably only because they struggled to find much evidence of it up here

WorldSkills is a fantastic showcase for employees and students alike. I work at Edinburgh's Telford College and we enter lots of students from different departments for the competition, it gives them a great boost of confidence when they get selected to take part. Also a good platform for agencies to see emerging talent too? If you have a star you'd like to shout about, I'd get them involved.

This about developing and spotting the talent of the future - not about the procurement process (which is undoubtedly flawed - believe me I have been involved in the form-fest for Public Sector contracts).

I will echo Pamela's comments below - it's a tough market out there and a dialogue and platform to bring on emerging talent can only be good for our industry.

There is a stand-alone arguement to be had on the laughable nature of procurement in such projects and the waste of resource already in the marketplace spent chasing budgets which are eclipsed by pitch costs to what is no more than a lottery for selection.

It is well and truly time that those in Scottish Government to spend time understanding the workings of the industry - perhaps this should be done before they look to develop strategies in bringing on the talent of tomorrow.
