Design consultancy navyblue has revealed its latest design work for the world's oldest bottle of single malt whisky.

navyblue created the new ‘Generations’ brand for Gordon & MacPhail under which a series of extremely rare malt whiskies will be released.

The Mortlach 70 years old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the first of these and navyblue senior designer Donna Hainan took as inspiration the idea of a single precious drop: this led to the tear-drop shape of the hand-blown crystal which is etched with deliberately contemporary typography and has no label: to allow for the full beauty of the whisky to shine through, revealing “the colour of sun-bleached polished mahogany” according to whisky writer and connoisseur, Charles MacLean.

The box design works around the idea of a frame rather than a container; echoing the minimalist style of the bottle by using hidden magnets rather than hinges and with the clean, modern logotype, chosen for the Generations brand, silver-foil stamped onto Brazilian rosewood.

navyblue Group MD Douglas Alexander said: “We were delighted to work on this historic project. Gordon & MacPhail and I go back 25 years, so the new Generations brand, created by navyblue, is particularly close to my heart.”
