The next phase of sports clothing manufacturer PUMA’s long-term sustainability programme will see the brand introduce a new sustainable packaging and distribution system, design by Yves Behar.

The ‘Clever Little Bag’ design has been created reduce waste and CO2 emissions made by traditional packaging manufacturing and saw PUMA work with Yves Behar from fuseproject in San Francisco.

Behar has designed a system which will replace cardboard shoeboxes with a sustainable shoe bag, which protects each pair of shoes from damage once it leaves the factory, until the consumer takes it home.

It is expected that a 65% reduction in paper will be achieved from the concept’s implementation, as well as a reduction in water, energy and diesel consumption by the manufacturer.

The roll out of the new packaging and distribution system is planned as of the second half of 2011.

So they are stopping using card, which is recyclable, and starting to use platic bags, which are not?

it's more the title of this story that is incorrect...

Watch the promo video http://www.formfiftyfive.com/2010/04/puma-re-invents-the-shoebox/ Its the production as well as the materials of producing traditional shoe boxes that will be reduced given this design, great idea well though through and presented beautifully. Only slight criticism is perhaps the name. Inspirational stuff.
