Clegg victory in ITV Prime Ministerial debate no surprise

Clegg victory in ITV Prime Ministerial debate no surpriseClegg victory in ITV Prime Ministerial debate no surprise

Nick Clegg's landslide victory in the very first Prime Ministerial debate did not surprise PR pundits who believed he always had the most to gain.

ITV  broadcast the first of the three debates and admitted it had reduced the race to the levels of X-factor after it run a viewers' poll to get instant feedback on the debate.

According to 43% of viewers Clegg was the winner, with David Cameron in second place with 26% and Gordon Brown third with 20%.

The results will no doubt have Tory and Labour strategists reviewing their leaders’ performances in time for the next two debates which will take place on BBC and Sky.

In many ways the result confirmed the predictions of many in the public relations industry, who predicted that Clegg – who is the lowest profile leader, as a result of leading the smallest party – had the most to gain from the debate.

Early estimates suggest that 20 million tuned in to watch the confrontation. Readers of The Drum wanting to pass judgement can do so by voting in our online poll.

Earlier this week, The Drum reported how each party's manifesto would affect the creative and media industries.

Those in the North and Scotland should be cautious of what a conservative government would mean for the creatIve industries.

Don't believe what the SNP say about a vote for them being a vote for more Scottish influence in Westminster, if Labour lose seats in Scotland, the Conservatives will win and they will care little for a region which ha given them so few votes.

At twentysix we've been running our own poll for Twitter users at www.10downingtweets.co.uk. If you've got a Twitter account, please feel free to cast your vote.

The Lib Dems are doing very well amongst Tweeters with 35% of the vote, especially after last night's performance. At the other end of the scale, the BNP aren't doing quite so well.

It was a contest of presentation Skills rather than an ability to Govern.

On presentation skills Clegg won hands down but could he form a Government....I think not!

Compared to US debates this was a damp....very damp squib!

Who ever we get, one things for sure, the countrie's biggest advertiser will slash it's budgets BIG time!!

Pity we don't actually vote for any of these people - unless you live in their constituency area. We get to vote for a money grabbing, expenses fiddling local representative instead.

I like Nick Clegg, always have. He had nothing to loose last night and took his opportunity well. The problem is which one of these people will be the next prime minister, is Gordan Brown really PM material?

13yrs of a disastrous labour government that have not fulfilled any of their pledges in there last manifesto. A bloated public sector that only a few agencies get any work out of. Millions unemployed and constant lying form a prime minister about everything. Move along Gordon and get a government that brings back fox hunting Vote Conservative!

Is this how we judge our politicians now? A kind of Prime Ministerial X-Factor? D'you think people who thought 'Nick Clegg did really well' have actually read his, or any of the others' policies? Why don't we just get them to sing songs instead? It's about as relevant.

Extract from the LD manifesto:

'We believe in freedom, justice, prosperity and human rights for all and will do all we can to work towards a world where these hopes become reality. Above all, climate change is the greatest challenge facing this generation'

can't argue with that? at least they seem more socialist than New labour!!
