Golley Slater Leeds offers 'life boat' desk for job seekers

Golley Slater Leeds has set up a service to support members of the industry affected by redundancy.

The ‘lifeboat desk’ has been set up by the agency for anyone in marketing made redundant to get in contact as they look to help find them new employment within the industry.

The desk, which is free of charge, is a space within the office and includes access to computers, printers, the design studio as well as contacts within the media industry and personal consultations with managing director Tim Orrell in finding new work.

Orrell explained: “I have been made redundant in the past and I know the difficulties and the frustration in not knowing when your next wage packed it going to arrive.

“Golley Slater is offering fresh ideas with which to invigorate your attitude to the business world, provide fun and imaginative ways in which to grab the attention of prospective employers whether it is simply an update of your CV or is an overhaul of your approach to approaching employers.”

He concluded, We really hope that we can help someone who is up employment creek without a paddle to get back to work and offer them some support during difficult times. Golley Slater is an inspiration company to work for and I find it very unlikely that anyone who comes to the Leeds office will leave without gaining some valuable insight.”

Brilliant Idea, good on you guys. I was made redundant a while ago and it took a long time to get back into a decent job, your confidence takes a real knock, and any help is really appreciated.

I went along to see them last week - the desk is right next to Tim's desk which is how seriously the guys are taking the situation there. Obviously they might have to knock back people due to demand - but they really did want to do their best for people in dire straights.

Great idea. Finding somewhere to get your work together (and confidence) is invaluable. Nice to see there some people working in advertising who think about the people who are made redundant, instead of pretending it isn't happening just so they can sleep at night. And if it helps Golly Slater as well - brilliant.

Excellent idea. I imagine there are plenty of people out there who will really appreciate this practical support. I'm sure keeping within an agency environment will also help in maintaining the momentum needed for getting a new positon quickly. Plus you never know, if Golley Slater are impressed with what they see....

Excellent idea - I too have felt the axe of redundancy (twice over) and it's a lonely place until you find a new position - good on the guys to understand this and create an environment to help boost the job opps and most important confidence of those affected by job loss - perhaps this might catch on ... I'm sure there are spare desks going around in most agencies across most disciplines.

No Catch, I've had to look for work in our industry having been "let go" and know how tough it is. Providing a desk, some contacts and a bit of support is the least we can do! Just hope we can help some people - there but for the grace of god and all that.

It wasn't so long ago that I was in the position of redundancy. Low esteme, low self confidence kicked in within a matter of days. Then the desperate thoughts of 'how am i going to pay my mortgage, live?'.
I would of been on the phone to you guys in a shot! A little helping hand with creativity, in a friendly atmosphere - fantastic idea. I really hope people in my situation give you a call and give it a try.
Good luck.

Well done GS.

Nice to see a company helping people.

Are there any other places that can do likewise?

After being made redundant twice in 2 years In the design industry I would of loved something like this, just being in an office environment instead of the threat of daytime TV is worth it alone

Great idea. Maybe they could roll it out across the other GS offices, sure there would be no shortage of applicants.

Tim, you have lead the way on this and all credit to you!

Like you say, it's the least we should all do! It would be nice to see the rest of us follow suit and forget the 'not invented here' feelings that supporting such a great idea might come with.

Really effing nice job!!!
