Vote for your favourite World Cup wall chart and get the winner free with The Drum in JuneVote for your favourite World Cup wall chart and

Two weeks ago creatives were tasked with creating a wall chart to enable football fans to keep track of all the World Cup action in South Africa. The Drum invites you to choose your favourite, to be printed and sent out with the magazine in time for the kick off.

The one that receives the most votes and complimentary comments in our comments section below will be printed by Montgomery Litho and distributed with the 11 June issue of The Drum - just in time for the footballing fun to start in South Africa on that very day.

We'd like to thank the agencies that have entered wall charts and wish them the best of luck as the compliments (and criticism) starts to fly below.

Sorry but the lion is typical commercial cliche garbage that you'd find printed on toilet paper and pinned to the wall in the local community center! Who reads this blog... I thought it was for creatives not people who like 'pretty pictures'. And agreed, that font is tosh.

I struggle to believe an agency as good as Fresh even posted that entry when there other entry is far superior. If the Lion gets printed I'll make sure it end up in the landfill where it belongs.

And, will the people who are voting fresh please start to declare which one they are voting for!

I'm going to vote for Nostradamus!

It's a shame that people hide under the anonymous tag to slate others' work. I freely admit to be a Fresh employee. It seems that the Drum's editorial have agreed with the overwhelming concensus here and voted for the lion image. Who am I to disagree. It's fabulous. Viv-id gets silver for me.

Surely most of the people voting for 'fresh' are voting for the 'Fresh' world Map entry
(No. 5-6)... Its a master class in design that should be the winner. If not, then the crappy lions face!

I agree with the previous comments on how a wallchart should only have 1 side. The Fresh 'Map' chart is beautiful, if complicated.

The real football viewers winner has to be Stu Seddon's calendar approach. It's the one entry that makes it perfectly clear who's playing when. Clean, simple and the perfect armchair (deskchair) companion.

So is the winner decided by the comments or a panel at the Drum? The problem with letting the 'people decide', is that it will probably come down to who can get the most colleagues/mates to vote for them (or dare I say it, who can post multiple times anonymously for the same design?).

I cant believe how much of an 'anonymous' battle this has become. Surely it's not a fair way of deciding the winner. Fresh's Lion has had almost as much positive as it has negatives which would in theory cancel it's votes out, but would seem to be leading the line.

Can we get some insight from the Drum's editors here please. :) What about picking the top five from the comments and then ask an educated industry figure who is oblivious to these comments to pick the winner.

Would that keep everyone happy?

WOW, it is getting heated, think fresh have 45+ positive votes and comments, 8 negative, hardly cancels it out - for me it hits the brief as does the Vi-vid one - bloody hell it's like a derby, guess we have to respect peoples opinions heh

I think Nick's right, the nature of the negative comments regarding the Fresh Lion count for a lot more than one vote, and I quote:

"the other (the lion) is just crap"

"Wow, so many votes for the Lions poster? Has no-one noticed that God-awful typeface 'South Africa' is in? Typefaces like that are reserved for cheap wedding stationery and not much else."

"agreed, that font is tosh."

"The lion is tragic - it can't win, it just can't."

"That lion irritates me."

"the lion is typical commercial cliche garbage that you'd find printed on toilet paper and pinned to the wall in the local community center!"

"If the Lion gets printed I'll make sure it end up in the landfill where it belongs."

"If the lion wins I'm going to burn it and put the video on you tube!"

"it’s kinda like a free calendar you may get in a garage"

"the crappy lions face!"

"Anything but the lion. Considering some of the other well designed charts on offer, it'd be a shame if that won."

Surely it can't win!?

Woah there! I wasn't having a dig at Fresh or their Lion, I just used that to highlight the point. I entered this competition to design a wall chart, not to get embroiled in this petty chaos! At least all the agencies/designers involved all now have a wall chart that they like, can print out and have in their studio's. Now, I must get on, I've got a business to run.

Good luck everyone!

Good luck to everyone.

I wish i'd entered this, I didn't realise that the baseline standard would be something knocked together in Publisher... SelfMadeHeroes or Vivid, to me, are by far the stand out designs.

Lee, what a lame post. The Drum knows what 'stand out design' is, they run a rather successful publication after all. And what stood out for them? Which image took pride (!) of place? The Fresh Lion................

Faceless vitriol abounds. We should be honest with each other about what we think. We should attempt to do it courteously but if we can't manage that, let's at least have the courage to let our identity stand behind our opinion.

I'll be honest, there's some fantastic wall charts here and it was great fun to be involved. I think design led charts dominate the entries and I'd like to have seen a few more idea led entries. But that's what our agency is about, we try and start from an idea and then make it look good. I admit the art director on the half full, half empty idea didn't feel he had enough time to do the idea justice - but that's agency life for you. Personally i thought the idea was a laugh, and it captured pub culture nicely. The nostradamus one is, in my opinion, a clever idea, lovely piece of design and the copy is what brings the idea home (shame you can't read it on screen). So my anonymous friends who want to have a go at lions, Fresh and IAS let it be known who you are so we can tell if you were collecting Roses awards for the second year in a row (like the IAS did) and may be worth paying attention to or if you are some nobody with too much time on their hands who has no choice but to remain anonymous whether they announce themselves or not.

I gave the the IAS creatives a segmented brief. Target the English audience with one and the rest of the world with the other. My theory was that English footie fans, players and managers tend to be less educated than say Scots, French or Italians, evidenced starkly by current English Premiership management trends. Hence half full/half empty targets the English, Nostradamus the rest of us. Nostradamus is clearly the best idea with the most engaging content, but will never win due to the amount of English voters. However I'm surprised our other one isn't romping it, but even it is maybe too clever. I think the amount of votes for the Lion proves my point, although, I'm heartened by the fact lots of people also hate it. Fresh for me as I wouldn't be so crass as to vote for myself.

27 May 2010 - 17:16
paul_foley's picture

Rob - to my mind 'best' means most commercially viable- If the brief was to make a commercially viable chart then your Nostradamus one fails- it evokes none of the spirit colour and passion of the modern game - that's why it won't win - could you really see it as an insert in the Sun, FHM, Nuts etc? I think not - however the half full half empty one sits better in that respect and I found it pretty funny.

With that in mind the the Lion one is spot on (can see it as an insert in main stream press) which is why I'm guessing it's been so popular and the Vivid one with the celebrations would be great in a lads mag.

The Fresh one is a beautiful piece of information graphics so lets hope creative review decide to do a world cup issue and stick it in;)

and look no anon post and p.s I'm scottish

Mike, did I touch a nerve? I didn't comment on the Lion because it wasn't my personal preference, I also didn't put down, provoke, or snipe at anyone else for having an opinion of their own, I'm not entirely sure why you chose to "have a pop" at my comment but I can only imagine it's because you may have been one of the people who used publisher?

Creative Review have included a rather lovely wallchart in the new issue. It's functional, subtly builds towards the final and best of all, looks great on our studio wall.

It even manages to have a sly dig at the pointlessness of the 3rd/4th place playoff.

Mitchell

"Sun, FHM, Nuts"

'Are chavs the demographic?'

Point taken. It wasn't stated in the brief who the target was so I was speaking hypothetically to make a point but commercial viability is what I would have gone for. Given the fact that football is a sport enjoyed by all strata of society I think the chart should have a pretty broad appeal which I don't think the Nostradamus one does. (BTW if you check out FHM's media pack their readership are certainly not chavs)

In this case as Eastern and montgomery litho are 'sponsoring' the whole thing we could say that the audience is advertising, marketing and design profs? Even at that for a claim to be made by it's creator that the nostradamus one is the 'best' is a little short sighted even if it is a clever idea - as I said before it doesn't capture the spirit, passion and excitement of the game which I feel should be key component of the piece.

Lee, no, you didn't touch a nerve at all. I thought your comment was lame because you were suggesting that HAD you entered then your success was a mere formality due to the poor standard of those that DID bother to.
I'm proud of the good grace shown by Fresh's staff in the face of some rather vitriolic comments about our entries. I'm also quietly confident that we may win this one.............................................Regards, Mike.

Fresh are having a laugh aren't they? One is hugely convoluted to the point of, well, pointlessness whilst the other (the lion) is just crap. Studio Precept's poster has a nice look to it – shame they ripped off The Sun's Terry Venables ad strapline and 2-stars idea. RR Donnelley's 'Them/Us' is funny but hopeless on its own as an actual World Cup chart. The less said about IAS B2B's entires the better.

All-in-all the quality isn't great (although it is all just a bit of fun I suppose) but my vote would go to Viv-id for being fun, an actual working and well-laid out wallchart and for the inclusion of the sweepstake element. It's a bit heavy on the self-promo side but I can let that go :-)

Just to clarify Studio Precept are NOT ripping off the Sun's campaign 'maybe just maybe' it is a homage with a negative/sarcastic spin stating 'Just Maybe'. The surrounding sea of emptiness also signifies the very little chance we have of winning it.
