Apple boss Steve Jobs has hailed the iPhone 4 launch as “the most successful in Apple’s history,” in the same week as reports of users resorting to nail polish to patch up dodgy reception on the £499 gadget.

Jobs had responded to customer complaints over a reduced signal when the phone is held from the bottom by advising: “Don’t hold it that way”, but some users are taking matters into their own hands by dabbing the beauty product onto their phones to prevent the skin interfering with an inbuilt antenna.

A whopping 1.7m of the fourth generation devices have been flogged since its launch three days ago, beating past launches into a cocked hat despite supply problems restricting availability.

Apple’s iPhone 3GS model was snapped up by 1m consumers in its launch weekend.

Nevertheless the results only fall midway between analyst’s expectations which had predicted sales in the range of 1-2m.
