Newly appointed group director of social marketing and online strategy for Lucre, Jono Marcus explains his top five tips for brands using social media.

Newly appointed group director of social marketing and online strategy for Lucre, Jono Marcus explains his top five tips for brands using social media.

In his five tips, Marcus explains that a social media campaign must look to engage with consumers while not making their lives more difficult.

He says that he believes that brands must also have a full understanding of what they are embarking on when looking to speak to consumers through social media channels, rather than looking to ‘wing it’ which could cause a backlash.

Marcus joined the Leeds and London PR agency from Cake where he was head of digital communications working with brands such as IKEA, Unlever and Motorola.

Marcus is now heading up Lucre Social, Lucre’s previously nascent digital arm and to mark this he will host a panel debate on 14 July, on the topic of social media as an avenue for  retail, featuring big names from Unilever, IKEA, Yahoo! Europe and FanShake.

You can read his five tips in full at the newly launched MiNetwork site

not sure I agree with you anon 14:33 - SM provides a useful bridging point in the marketing mix - generating return on engagement opportunities and creating valuable brand/consumer dialogue.

Handled well it is a great catalyst to growth and loyalty - handled innefectively and it can be disasterous.

Would be keen to see more info on where the debate is being held (and time)

Tip 6: Don't post your tips on a subscriber only site. Not very social, is it?

Mr Mutch. Anon 14:33 here. I was not referring to SM as old rope.

Merely the "tips" and their writer.

I agree SM has to be considered as part of the marketing mix but it's just today's must-have viral campaign.

It's all pretty much common sense, anyone proclaiming to be an "expert" is selling just another snake oil salesman IMHO.
