iPhone bug leaves Apple fans in a fix

iPhone bug leaves Apple fans in a fixiPhone bug leaves Apple fans in a fix

Just as Apple thought they had finally solved the infamous reception interference problems on their iPhone 4 range another potential bug has emerged.

A software patch is now available to correct the way that different versions of the handset display signal strength, by altering how many reception indicator bars a phone displays

But some 3GS users report that uploading the IOS4 software causes their phones to drop more calls, a glitch which leads the phone to suddenly reboot during a conversation.

One user on Apple’s forums, skimad4x4, complained: “A phone which simply cuts you off mid sentence is no ....... use to me!”

Apple has yet to give official advice to users experiencing this problem but is scheduled to hold a press conference this evening to discuss the ongoing iPhone 4 reception problem.

The Blackberry Storm 2 has exactly the same problem - mid call reboot - not a regular thing but a royal PITA when it does happen.

Mine seems OK for now however I did update my software today :S ... time will tell. I am rapidly loosing confidence in Apple.

PS I will still be investing in an ipad.

I think the fact that Apple have to have a press conference for one of their products means they have screwed up.

Even if the phone gets fixed somehow, I think Apple as a company have damaged their brand / image and have a lot to answer for. Specifically because:

(1) they keep denying there's an issue.
(2) they're telling tech staff not to help the customer, basically.
(3) Jobs' "don't hold it that way" is a direct slap to the customer that can never be retracted fully.
(4) Deleting board postings that are quite valid on the topic.
(5) Charging a restock fee to those who want to return the phone (the government might consider investigating this. If a phone is confirmed defective by nature, charging a fee to return is surely borderline criminal?)
(6) they admitted to lying about how signal strength is displayed to the customer on present and past devices (an egregious issue, IMO). That explains why so many iPhone customers complained of dropped calls even with more than enough bars.
(7) Consumer Reports lists it as Not Recommended and Apple STILL disregards the issue.

Having to put an ugly case on the phone in order for it to function normally is not a fix, I just dont understand how apple can fix the problem properly.
