A 300,000 signatory petition has been handed to Google by protestors angered by the search giants moves toward a two tier internet.

The document was presented at a rally outside ‘Googleplex’, the organisations Californian headquarters, at which 100 people waved placards urging executives to “save the internet” and “don’t be evil.”

Chanting “net neutrality is under attack, stand up and fight back” the fired up group mingled with reporters at the weekend meeting.

This hullabaloo centres on a recent joint statement by Google and Verizon which suggested distinguishing wireless services from their fixed line counterparts, a move which would allow carriers to prioritise high profit services.

At stake is the concept of net neutrality whereby every site from Ebay down to personal pages is given an equal playing field by broadband providers.

Google insist that they are “fierce” supporters of an open internet and that their policy would introduce “key enforceable protections” where currently there are none.
