Following a tender launched earlier this year, it appears that Tangent Graphic has been appointed by the Commonwealth Games following its hunt for a creative design agency.
The tender will see Tangent now handle creative design services, online and offline application and the development and application of creative guidelines over time and across disciplines and channels, as originally advertised.
A spokesperson for the Commonwealth Games confirmed that the shortlist of companies for the contract also included 999, O Street, D8 and McCann Erickson. However, McCann Erickson declined to pitch.
They also confirmed that the main work for Tangent, alongside several other programmes, was the design of the 2014 Pictograms, used to represent each of the sports featured in the Games.
Glasgow-based Marque created the original designs for the Glasgow Games.
Since the decision, however, one of the unsuccesful agencies, D8, has posted a blog on its website, showing its creative work produced for the pitch. The blog post reads: "We don’t exactly enjoy public sector procurement processes but the lure of designing pictograms, among other things, for an international sporting event was too great for us to ignore. We made it to the shortlist for providing creative design services for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It was a case of close but no cigar for us, however we believe our submission was of sufficient creative merit to publish here…"
The post has been picked up by a number of design blogs over the weekend, igniting a debate about what you can (and can't) do with pitch work that didn't get chosen.
When approached by The Drum for a comment on the blog post, D8 declined to comment further.

Congratulations lads!
I'd reckon D8 can do what they want with it - it's their intelectuall property. Maybe this kind of thing is good - stops clients getting a whole bunch of agencies to pitch then nicking the best bits from them and not appointing anyone.
Nice work The Drum - turning a tangent strory into a D8 story and in doing so kind of stealing their thunder.

Well done Tangent
Well done chaps, looking forward to seeing the results. Hope it's not stick man variations.

Great to see a smaller agency win such a high profile contract. Good folio of work so looking forward to seeing the roll out.

Well done guys. Looking forward to seeing it in its full bloom.
Interesting that D8 have hijacked a positive result for another agency winning a public sector pitch - when we were selected for the Scottish Government roster and they weren't, the first thing they did was launch an FOI...
From what I can see their work they have released looks pretty poor, so maybe you should concentrate on upping the standard of the work guys?
Don't have a problem with D8 showcasing the pitch on their site. It's called business and if D8 think it helps them to be seen to be associated with the event then fair enough. They're not claiming to have won it and they obviously put many hours into pitching so by all means recoup some of the effort.

Well deserved Tangent, great win

I think D8 are fully entitled to do what they want with their work and I respect them for using it. If they'd been paid a pitch fee, it might be different. But pitch fee - Who am I kidding? Well done to Tangent . Look forward to seeing the creative output.
Well done Frame!

Well done guys, great to see high profile contracts being won on the quality of the company and not their size. Personally I think it is quite sad when an agency shows work for a pitch that they have lost and especially in this instance when it has been done in such a petulant manner.....grow up.

whatever their reasons, it's just a shame that this story now seems all about D8 losing the pitch rather than Tangent winning it, which seems a bit backward to me...
Actually the interesting part of this story is the bit about D8. I had never heard of them before and am now quite impressed by their work, as well as their spirit.
One of the biggest issues our industry faces is the way we have to win work, by doing the work, and this little story shows how much effort goes straight into the bin, particularly during public sector procurement processes.
There's nothing petulant about what they've done - I read into it that they took pride in what they came up with. And as for the debate as to whether they can show losing pitch work, there's no debate. It's their work unless someone buys it.
Well done D8 for getting something out of this.

Surely a company can better get across the quality of their work and their spirit by using case studies of work they have won as opposed to work they have lost. Talking about spirit I think the thing here is the spirit in which the post was created, which is questionable.
The only thing I would say is that if you think D8 do good work, then surely it's a testament to how good Tangent are that they won the pitch and I'm in no doubt you will be blown away by the work Tangent ultimately produce over the term for contract.
My issue is not with who does better work, and I'm with you in looking forward to seeing the winning designs.
The point is about waste. That's all.
So Anon 14:43.
When did you or your friend start working for D8?
The story, correct me if I am wrong is "Tangent Graphic tasked to design 2014 Commonwealth Games pictograms" not "D8 not tasked to design the 2014 Commonwealth Games pictograms, close but no cigar for them".
The story is about Tangent Graphic and their ideas being winning ones. What it is not about is the other agencies whose ideas were considered "not good enough" or as put more generously "close but no cigar".
We have yet to see the other agencies involved in the processes ideas, no blog posting for them as yet... maybe they have decided to be gracious in defeat and decide to wait until the "winning" Agency, Tangent Graphic, had their day in The Drum.
Well done Tangent Graphic, cant wait to see those brilliant, pitch winning ideas of yours.

Great news guys - well done!

I have no connections with D8. In fact, I work in London and would be suprised if D8 even recognised my name.
You are being naive about PR. I was merely observing that something very interesting has happened here.
Learn from this.
Dear Anon 14:43/21:08,
Learn from this too... "if D8 even recognised my name" sure every body knows your name, you're Sir Richard Whittington.
Just to clarify what I said the story is about Tangent Graphic and their ideas being winning ones.
Also, please do not assume anything about me especially with regards PR as you are not doing yours any favours.
Learn from this.
as Harry Hill would say...'FIGHT'

Excellent news for Tangent Graphic - a real scoop for an up and coming agency, lots of scope to produce something really memorable - well done troops!
Anon 10:09.
Congratulations on your ability to clarify what the story was initially about. You may now progress to 'interpretative reading, level 1'.
Also, try and polish up your debating skills (and grasp of the English language) before you return to this forum. Perhaps this is not for you?
Sir Richard
Two points:
1. Tangent are one the the best design agencies in Scotland and I'm certain the work they will unveil will be brilliant.
2. D8 are one of the better design agencies in Glasgow but the unsuccessful work they have shown is really rather poor, especially their 2nd option. They have done themselves no favours I'm afraid.
Sir Richard,
One doth protest to your assumptions and accusations with regards ones debating skills and use of the Queens Engerlish. This is indeed uncalled for and one is most deeply upset.
What one does realise is that Sir Richard has not yet mastered the art of understanding the reasons behind the debating, this I suppose will come with time. Digesting the information before "voicing your opinion" is not in any way a form of debating.
In summary Sir Richard, one has to take a long hard look at ones self before scrutinising others.
Yours,
The Uneducated (but trying) AKA Anon 10:09
Uneducated AKA Anon 10:09,
Sir Richard offers a sincere and contrite apology. I was in a bad mood and being a total prat.
Travel well.
what a lovely ending!!
Sir Richard,
There is no need to apologise as one completely understands. We do indeed have those times of the month that makes us irritable and unpredicatable.
Have a wonderful day and as they say... alls well that ends well.
Uneducated AKA Anon 10:09
P.s. Just in case I forget, great News Tangent Graphic the true winners in this story.
