Caledonian MacBrayne has released an iPhone application as it aims to keep its travellers informed of its ferry services.
Developed by Sitekit, the apps include a range of information including service updates, while the company has also upgrades its SMS text service to provide free, unlimited updates on its services too.
A Blackberry version of the app is currently in development.
The ferry service has also unveiled its Explore 2011 brochure, a planning tool for everyone interesting in traveling to the 24 destinations off of Scotland’s west coast.
Phil Preston, managing director of CalMac, commented: “We are sure these new apps and the enhanced SMS text service will be invaluable tools for ferry travellers on the move, providing up to date information to let customers plan their journeys as weather or other disruptions evolve. “Information on how to use these services is available online on our website which is also undergoing a major makeover to provide even more information on our services whether for regular travellers or holidaymakers.”
The new features on the website include an online booking panel added to every page, added information to help travelers explore the company’s network, plan their journey or know what to expect on the ferries, and a selection of common customer questions.
“These improvements have been made as a result of customer feedback and also to reflect the changes in the way in which people now use the internet and their expectation of what a website should provide,” added Preston.

I don't know to be honest, we only know who won. We were disappointed because we thought we had a pretty strong pitch...and it turns out we did!
i suppose there is always the chance that radiator had similar ideas to your company anon 13:48 and perhaps just had a better pitch and won the client over?
a good win for good agency all the same.
Yes it's possible, not having seen their pitch it's hard to tell. But then again, two maybe even three similair features I'd give...but there are a lot of ideas from our pitch that we see coming through. As I suggested before I don't doubt Radiator's integrity, just their client's. Anyway nothing we can do about it now.
I've just been looking at the new Calmac site. To be told you've lost out on the tender is disappointing, to see your ideas ripped off is infuriating but to see your ideas ripped off this badly makes my blood boil. Booking panel on every page, 3 site highlights under the main content, navigation shortcuts, disruption tickertape, destinations gallery...need I go on. I'm sure, given that the pitch was some time ago, Calmac forget where these came from and probably think the inspiration was theirs.
One of the world's most beautiful areas and they've managed to hide it behind a dog's dinner of offers and ads. Inspire me? Not here it won't.
Hope you enjoyed the free consultancy.
so who won the tender?
Radiator, although I'm sure fault is with Calmac - 'can we have this or we thought it would be good if we had a...'
who where the other agencies piching then?
