The Drum fires a few questions at today's guest editor Tony Foggett...
Hi Tony. How did you first get into digital?
I got into digital at uni, back when it was called Multimedia and was all about Kiosks and CDROMs. Actually I was at Manchester Met, on a course called Interactive and Broadcast Media. In their wisdom they shut down that course in '98, a couple of years after I left. Obviously they couldn’t see a future in it.
What has 2010 taught you?
I’ve been lucky enough to spend time this year making sense of the changes our industry is facing and how our agency needs to adapt. But I guess the big lesson for me was how important it is to build that adaptability into the fabric of the business rather than leave it all to the management.
If as a Christmas present we could give you one new client from any in the world, who would you choose and why?
Lego. My favourite kind of opportunity is where the work we do actually enhances the service or product experience; Lego aren’t taking this opportunity and the audience and product is perfect for the medium. I also love Lego more than my six year old – and that’s saying something.
Which websites do you visit religiously and which is your favourite ever site?
Religiously just the BBC. Chrome is showing my current most visited list as BBC, Facebook, Berghaus.com (we get a discount and I’ve been stocking up), Guardian, MyP2P.eu and Cbeebies.
To be honest I do the majority of my browsing via my mobile/iPad now which also means I have often switched to the app versions of a lot of sites.
And last but not least, how much convincing did you need to do that dance at the Mi Awards?
None, I’m afraid. I thought the notion of having to stand up and do a speech about why we should win the grand prix was an awful idea. I was prepared to do anything to get out of it. Napoleon and Pedro were meant to be our own little protest about the concept but clearly it didn't work. I really hope they don’t ask people to do it again next year but have a terrible feeling that they will.
In fairness I probably should mention that my friends will tell you I’ve been ready to do that for years. It is my all time favourite film.
