BBC Scotland braced for cutbacksBBC Scotland braced for cutbacks

Scotland will not escape the savage national reduction in personnel announced for BBC Online it has emerged, after BBC Scotland told The Drum that they are set to lose 12 members of staff.

This amounts to 25% of the department’s manpower and is proportional to the UK wide reductions, which are seeing 360 of the departments 1,600 staff made redundant.

In an internal email to staff Donalda MacKinnon, head of programmes and services at BBC Scotland, said: “Broadly, we have to make savings of 7% in News Online, 17% in Sport Online and 24% across the online areas of Learning, New Media, Radio and Gaelic.

“Three post losses in News and Sport online have already been managed locally in anticipation of the outcomes of the Online Review in these areas.  In the non-News and Sport areas, we estimate the savings will mean the potential closure of approximately 12 posts."

Updated: A spokesperson for BBC Bristol said that they were currently unsure of how many would be affected, and said that the regional offices had also not been informed of the impact that the cuts would mean for each office, but that the cutbacks would be felt across the BBC as a whole.
