The iPlayer’s arrival on a spate of new platforms heralds a mobile future for the TV streaming service according to Daniel Danker, the BBC’s head of on-demand programming.

It follows a succession of record breaking months for the service which, with help from an advertising campaign, welcomed 162m requests last month.

This was aided in part by the services smartphone debut as Danker enthused: “The ratio of growth we're seeing is incredible.

"I'm not a betting man, but if I was then I'd bet that this will continue to grow. It's about to really climb. The share of how people are viewing TV will look meaningfully different at the end of this year."

Danker believes these trends herald an “expansion of prime time” as people forego other activities to extend their viewing experience through alternative mediums.
