Sandwich specialist Subway has announced that it has overtaken McDonald’s, in terms of total number of outlets, for the first time.

By the end of last year the chain had gobbled up 33,749 sites in 95 countries around the globe, a full 1,000 restaurants more than its burger based rivals McDonald’s which ran 32,737 eateries worldwide.

The turnaround comes following a major international push by Subway which has pursued a franchise model of small, low cost diners.

McDonald’s, itself still growing albeit at a slower pace, can still lay claim to operating in more countries however (117) and employing more staff (1.7m).

The UK is Subway's third largest territory with 1,385 stores, behind only the US with 24,015 and Canada with ,592.
