David Mannion is to leave his frontline role after three decades to take a strategy role advising ITN chief John Hardie.

Mannion will leave his post in July after nine years at ITV News which culminated in News at Ten scooping Bafta and Royal Televsion Society awards last year.

The Guardian reports that Mannion will take on a newly created role of special advisor to Hardie to "influence ITN's strategy and policy at a corporate level".

He is expected to advise Hardie and other ITV executives on future planning, new business and looking to grow revenue outside of ITN's established clients.

Mannion has previously edited ITV current affairs programmes Tonight with Trevor McDonald and The Cook Report and was also deputy editor of Channel 4 News.

ITV director of news, current affairs and sport, Michael Jermey said of Mannion: "He has played a major role in shaping modern television news. His enormous contribution to ITV News cannot be overstated."
