The tablet craze has directly led to a rejuvenation in the subscriptions at the Wall Street Journal, according to its publisher Dow Jones.

Les Hinton, head of the firm, said that 200,000 paying subscribers had been brought on board thanks to devices such as the iPad and Kindle.

Hinton added that the “migration” to mobile products was “inevitable” and that the primary issue facing publishers was how to balance out that transition.

Hinton continued: "The actual proliferation of these [devices] is so rapid. What surprised us are that other periodicals than ours (also) seem to be getting good traction".

At present subscribers pay £2.49 a week to read the Wall Street Journal on their tablets
