Top Gear, the motoring magazine show fronted by outspoken petrol head Jeremy Clarkson, is at the centre of a court battle over claims that producers had fabricated false results in a review of the world’s sole mass produced electric sports car.
Tesla, manufacturer of the vehicle, initiated legal proceedings against the BBC claiming that they had been the victim of libel after failing to reach an agreement with the BBC in over two years of legal wrangling.
The complaint stems from an episode first broadcast in December 2008 in which Clarkson claimed the vehicle ran out of juice having covered a mere 55 miles, further alleging that the engine overheated and the brakes were faulty.
Tesla allege that these breakdowns were staged and are demanding that the broadcaster desist from further screenings of the controversial episode.

About time this smug group of presenters got their comeuppance. So much of this show is obviously contrived and staged there might be a real difficult proving otherwise in this particular case.
Remember when this was a funny, not obviously staged programme which didn't court controversy to get talked about? seems a long time ago
