A young footballer at Berwick Rangers has been sacked following comments made on a social networking site regarding Neil Lennon being targeted by bombers.

The club said in a statement that his contract has been “terminated with immediate effect”.

Berwick Rangers did not name the footballer referring to him only as “a young footballer on an Amateur Contract with the club”, but according to STV it is thought Kieran Bowell is the teenager in question.

Bowell, who claimed on his Twitter page to be the under 17s captain of Berwick Rangers, tweeted: "Wish that parcel bomb fucking killed neil lennon the little cunt! #celtic"

The Twitter page no longer exists.

The full statement from Berwick Rangers said: “It has been brought to the attention of Berwick Rangers that a young footballer on an Amateur Contract with the club has made a comment on a social networking site relating to the recent story concerning the posting of a parcel bomb to Neil Lennon. This comment was completely unacceptable and as a result the Amateur Contract of the player has been terminated with immediate effect. The player has offered an unreserved apology and accepts his conduct is outwith the attitudes and behaviour expected from any person associated with Berwick Rangers at any level. The Club very much regret any offence caused by his actions.”

Strathclyde Police had asked Scottish newspapers not to report the story of Lennon being targeted by bombers, but the voluntary news blackout was broken this morning.

Not another typo, people? Surely you meant 'the Under 7s captain of Berwick Rangers'? Get it together, Drumsters.

Institutional sectarianism ...........I'm sure there's more that we don't know about, time to clean the house of this scourge on our society! Little reprobates like this that give Scotland and it's society such a bad name. Sad thing is he will be lauded as a hero by the other miscreants who also think this way!

Other sad thing is I need to post this anonymously to avoid any recrimination......point proven !

Awww, kids eh? The little tyke.
Shame his career has been cut short as he obviously has the all the brains and linguistic dexterity needed for a professional footballer, the kid could have gone far.
Aren't you all just loving these 'social media' gaffs? Yet another cautionary tale me thinks.

You bunch of Basta...!!!!

C'mon guys, read your comments, fair enough to post, but i would like to add in the lads defence (if that is possible), that this is no 'under 7's' 'retrobate', this is a young lad who (at under 17 remember) who has made a totally inappropriate remark, while probably surrounded by lads the same age, a remark which is not really his thinking, but which has been made due to posts in the press. The lad has been known to me for 13 years and has not got a malicious bone in his body, and i think is being made to be a scapegoat to the many 'neil lennon jokes' which are 'on the rounds' of social networking sites etc just now. I think it would have been a 'much bigger' thing for his club, Berwick Rangers, to come out and say they were going to bring thier players in ( especially players of that age ), and educate them on social etiquiate and of what anything said came back on both themselves and the club, at 17 these guys are still learning! As for my opinion, completely shocked, this is not football, this is a police matter and it should be left as so! As for Neill Lennon, me personally, top bloke, i am a Hibby and i would love him as our mgr (yeah yeah, know he's not used to such a big club!), but N.L. hope you can continue doing what you do, and hope the authorities can see fit to give this guy ( K.B. ) the chance to appologise and carry on his career, which he gave so much too, and let him educate others on appropriate behaviour.
Yours, a football fan.

Well obviously due to the grammatical content of the tweet we are dealing with a highly educated individual and check out Tweet 2 of the image - I think it should read off to the Southern General for a brain scan.
