Journalists at Newsquest South London are set for two days of strike action next week in response to redundancies made at the company, and the quality of local journalism.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has said that its members, who are already working to rule, will strike on 15 and 16 June following a ballot vote.
A unanimous vote of no confidence has already been received by the company’s management following a number of editorial redundancies, while the company continues to make ‘substantial’ profits.
Newsquest London has announced that jobs will be lost at Croydon Guardian, Elmbridge Guardian, Epsom Guardian, Kingston Guardian, Streatham Guardian, Surrey Comet, Sutton Guardian, Wandsworth Guardian and Wimbledon Guardian.
Barry Firzpatrick, head of publishing for the NUJ, said: "Our members' overwhelming decision to take strike action in defence of jobs and quality was the inevitable result of a wrong-headed management policy. But it is not too late for the company to show some sense and sit down with us to discuss the future security of the papers which are so important to our members and their communities."
Meanwhile, the NUJ is currently in talks with management at The Daily Record and Sunday Mail following the announcement of 90 editorial jobs cuts at the Glasgow publishers.
