SCOTS PRESS WOES Scottish newspapers are 'in crisis' according to a piece by Tim Luckhurst, a former editor of The Scotsman, in the Independent on Sunday. "The excellence of Scottish journalism helped make the case for devolution," Luckhurst writes. "Its decline has inaugurated an era in which citizens contemplating national independence face a historic dearth of autonomous journalism."

RONAN'S READIES Britain's Got Talent runner-up Ronan Parke is set to earn twice as much as the series winner Jai McDowall, the News of the World claims [behind paywall]. The tabloid says the 12-year-old will earn £30,000 for singing just three songs.

PHONE HACKING Police in charge of the News of the World phone hacking case are investigating a wider time frame than has previously been thought, according to an exclusive in the Independent on Sunday. The paper denies any offences were committed outside 2004 to 2006, but the Independent claims at least three complaints refer to alleged hacking before or after those dates.

MURRAY MINTED The Royal Bank of Scotland has extended its seven-figure sponsorship of tennis ace Andy Murray, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The deal is believed to be worth upwards of the £2m-a-year contract first struck in 2009.

IMF HACKED The International Monetary Fund has been hit by a sophisticated cyber attack. Officials gave few details but described the hacking as "a very major breach of its systems" says the New York Times.

BBC CUTS The BBC could cut parts of its sports coverage and a digital channel, reports the Independent on Sunday. New BBC chairman Lord Patten has admitted the cuts could happen but said he would fight to spare the World Service from the axe.

OWN GOAL The Observer says football's Premier League has withdrawn £1.2m of funding from Supporters Direct because of 'insulting' comments made by the fan body's chief executive on Twitter.

HEALTH CAMPAIGN Drinks company Diageo will pay for 10,000 midwives in England and Wales to be trained to offer advice on the dangers of alcohol during pregnancy, reports the BBC

GLASGOW GOES HOLLYWOOD Film star Brad Pitt is coming to Scotland to shoot a new £80m zombie film, beams the Sunday Mail. From August Glasgow will double as the US city of Philadelphia.
