Scottish Government asked to set up newspaper commission Scottish Government asked to set up newspaper commission

The Scottish Government has been asked to consider setting up a newspaper version of the broadcasting commission launched four years ago, following the proposed job cuts at the Daily Record.

The consideration was put forward by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Friday 24 June as part of a three-pronged response against the planned cuts, with the other two prongs being legal and industrial actions.

Paul Holleran, NUJ's Scottish Organiser, told allmediascotland: "A commission would look at the role the banks could perform to save newspapers from going under and maybe how the Government could perhaps act as a guarantor.

“It could look at the changing face of advertising, the impact of new technology, not to mention ownership and the salaries of chief executives."
