Facebook sets up roadblocks to stop users exporting friends to Google+

If you were wondering about Google+ and how big a threat to Facebook it could be, wonder no more. Zuckerberg's guys seem determined to stop any drift . . .

Last week, Facebook blocked a Google Chrome extension for exporting Facebook contacts. Now they have barred an Open-Xchange tool that lets Facebook users export their friends into other products and services, the website ZDNet reports.

The tool was not in violation of Facebook’s Terms and Conditions - in the opinion of  New York-based Open-Xchange . Facebook thought otherwise. They sent an e-mail to Open-Xchange saying their app Connector for ox.io had been disabled for a number of alleged violations. Facebook said, "You cannot use a user's friend list outside of your application , even if a user consents to such a use."

CEO of Open-Xchange Rafael Laguna said, “Clearly, Facebook management does not want you to have the ability to take your personal information outside their walls to, say, Google+ .

"They will do everything in their power to stop you, including violating their own terms and conditions. If you want to see what a future looks like where a single company controls YOUR personal data for its own profit, this is a glimpse.”

He added, "From a technical standpoint, Facebook’s claim of violation of terms is preposterous. All we are doing is using the Facebook API to extract the last name and first name fields. We are not parsing or or scraping the email address.

"This is not about user experience. It is about Facebook NOT wanting anyone to control their personal information - except Facebook.”

The tool works by merging all a user's networks, address books, and contacts from your emails into one big address book. The merged address book can then be exported as a vCard and imported into whatever service you like - Apple iCal keep trying to make the tool work or simply accept Facebook’s rules.  \

“Stay tuned – this story is not over by a long shot,” an Open-Xchange spokesperson said .

Google has already indexed the vast majority of Facebook users and their friends so that it only takes a single button to invite all your Facebook friends from Google+
