British households are still keeping up with the Jones’s according to new data from Best Buy, with the average girth of a UK telly expanding from 32.9” to 35.9” in the past year.

The growth spurt is attributed by the technology store to the increasing popularity of giant 40” and 47” models as consumers race to maximise screen real estate in the wake of industry innovations in high definition and 3d broadcasts.

Sales increase in this extra large category have surged by more than 93% whilst prices have collapsed by a third.
Rob Wilkins, Head of Home Theatre and Entertainment at Best Buy, said that “screen size braggers are back”, noting:

“Over the last five years, the desire to have the biggest screen on the street seemed to diminish and the average TV size levelled off at around 32”.

“However the advent of 3D and internet-ready Smart TVs has got people pulling out their tape measures again and opting for extra large 42”models and above.”
