An award is to be launched bearing the name of ‘the father of modern advertising’ David Ogilvy, to celebrate creative talent in Scotland.

The Ogilvy Award will be launched by the Scottish Government, in partnership with the Scottish Marketing Society, and will be presented as part of St Andrew’s Day celebrations to a Scot who excels in marketing internationally.

The award will also be launched on the centenary anniversary of Ogilvy's birth.

Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, commented: “To many, David Ogilvy was the father of modern advertising – a talented and charismatic figure extremely proud of his Scottish roots.

“Ogilvy claimed it was his heritage that developed his passion for marketing effectiveness as well as the craft of creative execution.  A serial networker and storyteller, his habit of wearing the kilt to cocktail parties ensured that - like his advertising - he stood out from the crowd.

“This spirit will be honoured for the first time on St Andrew’s Day when the inaugural award will be presented to a Scot delivering excellent results on the world stage enhancing Scotland’s international reputation as a great source of talent and innovation.

“With 2012 designated the year of creative Scotland we mark the start of an exciting three-year £6.5 million cultural programme that will embrace London 2012 and go on to celebrate Glasgow 2014.

“With the eyes of the world on the UK, and Scotland’s arts and culture already a major draw for visitors, there should be plenty of opportunities to promote Scotland to millions more people across the globe.”

Since when did Fiona Hyslop know jack-shit about advertising? Other than that, this is a nice idea.
