New Twitter tool lets you know if tweets really are driving traffic to your web site

TwitterTwitter

It's fun tweeting away but now you will be able to find out how many people are being attracted to your website as a result.

Many of Twitter's 100 million users hope their tweets will drive traffic to their web sites. Until now, however, there were no in-depth analytics from the micro-blogging site to show if that was happening.

Twitter's Christopher Golda admitted in a blog post,"Web analytics software hasn't evolved as quickly as online sharing and social signals,"  The new Web analytics platform, unveiled at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco this week, should fix that.   Gold described it as "a tool that helps Web site owners understand how much traffic they receive from Twitter and the effectiveness of Twitter integrations on their sites."   Twitter Web Analytics,  said PC Magazine, is a result of the company's June acquisition of BackType , of which Golda is a co-founder.  BackType had a product called BackTweets, which helped companies in understand the influence of their 140-character messages.  In his blog post, Golda said the Twitter analytics tool would give Web site owners the ability to understand how much their Web site content was being shared across the Twitter network- and see the amount of traffic Twitter sent to their site.  The service will begin this week for a small pilot group and will expand to all Web site owners in the next few weeks.  The company is also expanding its Promoted Tweets platform, first announced in April 2010. At the time,Twitter partnered with advertisers, including Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks, and Virgin America. If you searched for those brands on Twitter, the top search result would be an ad from those sponsors.   At first, Promoted Tweets were only included in search results, but later Twitter added Promoted Tweets to its trending topics bar. Now Twitter says Promoted Tweets will start showing up in the stream of tweets from people you follow.
